DeCarlo’s Celebrates 50 Years in Business!

DeCarlo’s Banquet & Convention Center is celebrating 50 years in business this year.  We will be interviewing Gary DeCarlo on the past, present, and future of their catering hall.

Gary, how did you get started in the catering business?
In 1973, I joined my father John DeCarlo and cousin, Bruce Hawk, who bought Don & Jerry’s Industrial Catering from Uncle Jerry in 1968.

How did DeCarlo’s Banquet & Convention Center come into formation?
Uncle Jerry Hawk and his partners built the hall in 1969.  After years in the car business, I bought the hall in 1997.

What major changes have occurred in the industry through the years?
There have been a few economical and industrial changes through the years that have affected the business at DeCarlo’s Banquet and Convention Center.   In 1979, the completion of I-696 had a positive impact on business.   The finally completed interstate formed a beltway making the banquet center a prime location accessible from all areas of metropolitan Detroit.

Is there any event that has drastically affected the company in its journey?
In 1998, a complete remodeling of the hall started and was completed in 2001.  This included the driveway and new sign on Mound Road, a passenger elevator, new kitchen and oak wainscoting throughout the building.

How did you move past these significant issues?

Most importantly, DeCarlo’s Banquet & Convention Center has always maintained the excellent quality of their food, offered moderate pricing and phenomenal service.  We have served over 5 million people over the years.

How do you see the future of the industry?
As long as we adjust to the times, I see our banquet center as a great place for all size events. DeCarlo’s moderate pricing and a great reputation will sustain.

DeCarlo’s Banquet and Convention Center has always been involved in giving back to the community with numerous events throughout the year that raise thousands of dollars for many charities.  We have always been involved with the Knights of Columbus, Alhambra, Red & White FEZ Club, John W. Smith Old Timers Club, Kiwanis, Lions Club, the Rotary, and the Italian Chamber of Commerce.

DeCarlo's is one of the finest full-catering banquet and convention centers in Southeast Michigan. It houses seven beautifully renovated rooms on two levels (with elevator accessibility) that can accommodate anywhere from 35 - 1425 people. We personally invite you to view our seven banquet halls.  Call us today at 586-759-6500 or visit us on our contact form to get information on your next event.
